And the great thing about this, for our purposes, is that everyone at one time or another hasn't been happy with their hair. From forced trips to the barber shop to a cow lick that won't stay down.

So bring it up in your readings. "There have been times when you weren't happy with your hair." Or..."I get a sense that you haven't always been happy with your hair." (It would be best to work out your own routine.)

Think about your life. Have you always been delighted with your hair? I certainly haven't.

Although you could use the Bad Hair/Problem Hair line while giving a past, present, or future reading, I'd recommend just using in a past reading.

Some thought on this will tell you why: if you are giving a reading to someone who is graying or bald, it will be pretty obvious that this matters to them (if they do care, I'd say most do). And of course, nobody wants to hear that they are going to thin out and/or go gray and/or go bald. So leave it out of your future readings.

It's up to you if you want to tell someone about their hair if you can tell they are dying it or wearing a toupee.

Finally available: The Cold Reading Mastery Course

If you've been trying to learn cold reading, but are frustrated at the lack of decent information out there, I know the feeling. Sure, there are some great cold reading books on the market. Books like Ian Rowland's Full Facts Book of Cold Reading (more of an exposé than a how-to) and Kenton Kneppler's Completely Cold (good for quick 5 minute readings) are good as introductions.

But if you want a step-by-step guide on how to give incredible readings effortlessly, check out this webpage: Cold Reading Mastery Course.

Unfinished Busine...

Here's a great technique to use when you are talking about a sitter's/client's past: talk about their unfinished business.

Bring up the sense, the impression, the sight (if scrying), of some sort of unfinished business in your clients' (or HB's) life. Let them fill in the blanks and tell you what it is.

For example, if I were to say to you, "Your Fate Line has a slight break in it towards your wrist; this tells me you have some sort of unfinished business... What does that mean to you?"

Upon hearing the "unfinished business" and the question, you might start a transderivational search for meaning. You might think of unfinished courses, unfinished books, appologies never given, forgiveness, no closure, something you wanted to say to a deceased relative, etc.

This technique is powerful and therefore it comes with a warning: for some people unfinished business has strong emotions attached to it, sometimes negative. If you are going to use unfinished business in your readings, you MUST calibrate your client's state.

Any sense of things going negative (sighing, down-turned mouth, getting misty eyed, immediate slumping of shoulders, etc.) you should immediately break state. You can do this by changing palms ("OK, let me see your other hand now."), having him or her cut the tarot deck, standing up, anything that changes their position or state. Then move on to something more positive.

This is an advanced cold reading technique. Use it carefully, and you will have a powerful tool in your psychic entertaining kit.

I think it would be great if you

Free Palm Reading Guide

I came across some good videos on palm reading basics. Keep in mind while watching the video that the teacher, Jim Winter, is closed-eyed about palm reading (just my assumption).

Still, learning palm reading from video is better than getting your palms read from a "real" psychic reader and "legit" palm reading books (how I learned years ago). This is just one in a series of videos, if you're interested in seeing more, just click the video and you'll be taken to the YouTube channel.

Failure Into Flexibility

Say you're new at giving cold readings and you have a few sticking points. For example, maybe you hem and haw when you can't think of anything to say. Perhaps you become flustered when you get a miss.

Whatever your dilemma (and we all have them at one time or another), we have a powerful way to eliminate your cold reading sticking points.

It's from the field of NLP, and it's called Failure Into Flexibility. You won't believe how simple it is...and the profound effect it will have on your readings.

Say you gave, what you feel, was a lousy reading. Here's what you do:

1. That day, while you're lying in bed, before you drift off to sleep for the night, in your mind's eye, go through the reading you gave earlier. It's like you are reliving the reading again.

2. When you get to the point where you had a problem, stop and freeze the action. Think about what you really wanted to accomplish with that person.

3. Now in your imagination, carry out the exact behavior you would have wanted. What would you have said? How would you like to have reacted? Imagine everything going as planned.

4. Anchor this desirable response into an external cue. It could be the palm of someone's hand (if you're doing palmistry) or the cards (Tarot), even somebody's face.

5. Go to sleep, realizing you are integrating these new desirable behaviors into future readings.

Always reflect on your performance. What did you do right? Did wrong? Could improve? Use the Failure Into Flexibility exercise whenever you need boost.

How to Guess Someone's Job With 99.999% Accuracy

In many readings, and especially ones for entertainment, clients (read: wise-asses) will often ask if you can "guess" what they do for a living. "Okay Mister Mind Reader, if you're such a psychic, what's my job?"

How would you answer, not knowing this person AND with hundreds of thousands of job descriptions out there?

The best answer you can give is that the person "fixes or repairs something". Apart from doing minor repairs to their cabs, they have routes "fixed" in their minds. A receptionist? Maybe he or she doesn't repair or fix anything per se, but there's a good chance their company might.

I'd say almost any job or career can be reframed as one that fixes problems or repairs something.

To get some practice with this, go over your job. . .and the jobs of family members, friends, and neighbours. How do their jobs fix or repair something?

(I got this idea from cold reader Herb Dewey, although he preferred to use the word "rehabilitate.")

Proof You Are Good

When I was in India, I saw this technique used a lot by the wandering psychic readers (and ear cleaners) who frequented the tourist haunts. They would carry a notebook around with them, and after they gave a reading, they'd have the customer write a few lines telling how great the reader was.

Of course, when the reader approached people, he'd show them his testimonial book. That would hook them in, they'd get a reading. The reader would get his fee and another testimonial.

If you are giving readings at events like psychic fairs or restaurants, you might want to start doing the same. After you've given the reading, ask your clients for a testimonial in writing and signed.

Then, once you have enough testimonials, you can have your book prominently displayed proving to prospective clients that you're the real deal.

Quick Cold Reading Tip: Easy Way to Avoid Misses

Here's an important tip to keep in mind, especially if you are just starting out in this field. When giving character readings, try to use conditional statements (can, could, somewhat, etc.) rather than universal quantifiers (always, never, etc.) in your readings. Also be careful of using implied universal quantifiers.

Check out the differences here:

• "You tend to be stubborn." Or, "You can be stubborn (at times)."

to this

• "You are stubborn." Or, "You're never stubborn." (Notice the first statement implies a universal statement.)

It's harder to disagree with the first statements, the ones that are conditional. Therefore, it's harder to miss with these kind of statements.

Here are a bunch of conditional words and phrases you can immediately add to your repertoire:

You tend to..., Now and then you...., Frequently you..., At times...., If you wanted to, you could..., You have a tendency to... Occasionally..., There have been times....

That should be enough to get you started since you have a tendency to catch on quickly.

Psychic Impressions

One of the things you're going to love about this next cold reading language pattern is how effective it is.

It allows you to make statements that can be complete misses and yet will fly right by your client, often encouraging them to add the missing information.

This language pattern and its variations are part of every good psychic's repertoire.

• There's
• I get
• I'm getting
• I'm picking up

an indication...
an impression...
a sense of...

You can mix and match the above since, for our purposes, they pretty much mean the same thing.

Here's an example:

READER: Looking at the cards, I'm getting an impression of a health concern.
CLIENT: Who? Me? I'm fine. (BLASTED! A MISS)
READER: Yes, that's right. And there's an indication of a health concern with an older member of your family.
CLIENT: Really? My parents are healthy.
READER: But I'm getting an impression of someone older than your parents.
CLIENT: Well, my grandparents have all passed away. Oh, wait, you know, my Uncle Jim had a heart attack two years ago.
READER: I thought so. The cards don't lie.
CLIENT: Wow.
What you tag on at the end is up to you: feelings, events, etc. Since what you're "seeing" isn't very clear and the language you're using suggests that, the client will fill in to help you out.

I'm getting an impression that in the days and weeks ahead, you'll find yourself using this pattern and others with ease and elegance.

Your Cold Reading Persona

How would it feel if you had a quick way to master cold reading? Although it is a skill that does take some practice, there are shortcuts to learning and one of these shortcuts is taking on a psychic's persona.

If you are giving readings to your friends or family, this isn't so important. If you want to pick up a cutie at a pub or do readings with strangers just for fun, you're going to have to at least say that you studied palmistry, astrology, or whatever divination technique, in order to be taken somewhat seriously.

But if you want to give psychic readings for money, you are going to have to develop a persona.

A persona is the combination of characteristics an actor takes on in order to become their chosen role.

What kind of persona? Well, as a psychic reader, how would you like to appear to others? Mysterious? Funny? Gentle? Therapeutic? Wise?

If you can't decide what persona, figure out which performers appeal to you. How about an actor or actress playing a role in a film?

Bear in mind, that your persona doesn't have to be an exact replica of someone famous. It can also be a composite of alluring traits.

Make a list of all the qualities, traits, characteristics, and behaviours you want to have in your persona. Just realizing consciously how you want to appear to others while you're cold reading can help. To take it a step further, however, think of the benefits of each quality, think of why each quality is important.

For example, if I have "speaking in a low voice" on my list of what I want to do during a reading, I might put this: "speaking in a low voice might make people more intrigued with what I say, will draw people physically closer to me as I speak, and develop deeper rapport."

Of course, you'll have your own reasons.

Be aware that this can be subtle. You don't really have to do a 180º in your personality if you don't want to. Remember, you are becoming an actor just doing a role.

By stepping into your cold reading persona and really getting into the tradecraft cold reading, you will be able to give far more convincing readings than if you were just your average joe-shmoe.

I wonder if you've already started to notice how you are subconsciously taking on the persona of a mesmerizing cold reader.

How to Build a Machine That Can Communicate With The Dead

Well, we don't need Sylvia Browne to help us talk to the deceased anymore! I'm just like that!" This just goes to show how robust and powerful these cold reading techniques and psychology really are: even a guy who's been doing this stuff for years can still be taken off guard.

Years ago I was showing a friend how one famous cold reader (who has gotten rich by communicating with strangers' dead relatives) uses a method called cold reading. And how it's just a psychological trick. I put my hand on his shoulder, closed my eyes for a second and told him, "When you were younger, you had a fight with your brother over something that broke and you stopped talking to each other for over a week."

He started shaking and looked at me like I was the devil himself. "How could you possibly know that?!" (Obviously a hit.) Telling him it was just a trick didn't help.

So, many times even when people know it's cold reading they think you're looking into their souls.

Back to that aforementioned website... I looked up another month (September), read it and thought, "Jeez, these guys really have me pegged. I'm just like that!"

Here's the site I'm talking about:

(What Your Birth Month Means...)

5 Ways Cold Reading Can Help You in "Real Life"

Sure you want to amaze people with your ability to tell a complete stranger about their past, present and future, like an open book. Perhaps you even picture yourself as the next Derren Brown cold reading guy. This is great, of course.

But there are some additional benefits of mastering cold reading. Most having to do with influence and persuasion. Let's take a look at five I think are pretty important:

1. Meet people.
People are fascinated with and drawn to psychics, mind reading and predictions. And if this person knows something about these subjects, he or she will never be at a loss for friends, partners, and opportunities. Just look at Jean Dixon.

PUAs have known that using cold reading techniques is a great way to meet beautiful ladies at the clubs. You don't even have to be (on the prowl) to meet new people. You walk into a bar with a friend and start looking at his or hand and just saying dumb stuff about the lines on their hands ("If your Heart Line is longer than your Head Line. This means your Head Line is shorter..."*)

But what if you don't have any friends, like when you move into a new city or are on holiday? A great way to have people come up to you (I know, approaching people is a drag) is to pull out a deck of Tarot cards, create a spread, and look like you are seriously comtemplating the meanings. (Actually, you could give imaginery readings in your head as you do this. Good practice.). If you are in a busy cafe or bar, nine times out of ten someone will start to talk to you about them. Offer them a free reading.

In another way, if you're new to a city and you want to meet people, just start taking classes in Palmistry or other pyschic arts. Look online or in the local entertainment paper for something like this. Studying a divination system is often a recommended way of learning cold reading.

Bear in mind that most of these people are closed-eye and won't take too kindly to why you are studying these divination systems.

2. Develop your intuition.
After you have been practicing your cold reading skills, you'll start developing a second sense about people. It's uncanny. You become a highly-tuned, highly-sensitive (mind reading machine). THIS is where eyes-closed "psychics" go wrong; they start to think they can REALLY know what a person is thinking. Although a highly developed sense of intuition is an important human skill, if you start to think you can really communicate with dead people, you'd best have a talk with James Randi. He'll straighten your ass out.

3. Tell if someone is lying. This is a corollary of No. 2 above. As a human, you've been dealing with liars all your life. I'd be lying if I said this was a bad thing. But as you develop your skills, you'll become more sensitive when someone is lying to you. (Would I lie to you?) Homicide investigators develop this sense to an incredibly high degree and can often tell when the suspect they are talking to committed the murder. We're just a step away from Minority Report.

4. Develop rapport.
As you give more readings and develop your sensory acuity, you'll start to automatically and unconsciously create stronger bonds with people. People will feel like they've known you for years. Master salespeople have this skill down pat. "We buy from people who not only like us, but are like us." You'll be able to give people what they want because you'll know what they want.

5. Make Money.
I saved the best for last. As you probably know, some people have made themselves millionaires by parlaying their cold reading skills into pay dirt. Unfortunately, some of these men and women are con artists preying on people desperate for answers. But there are big rewards for people who are skilled in cold reading as psychic entertainment.

You have all sorts of options to cash in with cold reading—from psychic fairs to psychic parties to writing books.

The well-known psychic entertainer Richard Webster said that when he was just starting out, he'd go down to the local pub with a sketchbook and color pencils and start giving Aura readings to the patrons for ten dollars a reading.

So there you go, five ways cold reading can enhance your life. And that's just a start. I'm sure you'll think of a few more ways as you develop your skills.

* Believe it or not, years ago I used this line on a lady I met in a bar. Her friends who were looking on were impressed (she wasn't). But it just goes to show, if you look confident and look like you know what you're doing, people will absolutely EAT UP whatever you say.

How to Cold Reading: Paraphrasing and Backtracking for Fun & Profit

A quick way to build rapport and understanding with your sitter is to use a technique that psychiatrists, counsellors, AND "pro" psychic readers use. It's a simple technique that makes the person you're talking with feel understood.

And although it is a vital skill and quite easy. It does take some practice. People in our western culture tend NOT to listen. We often remain quiet while the other person is talking, just remaining silent until it's our turn to speak. In other words: NOT LISTENING.

So you simply paraphrase what your sitter has just said.

The thing is that when you repeat back what someone has said, it's very soothing. Finally, someone understands what they're saying.

Now you can't repeat back what they've just said verbatim. You'll sound like a parrot. Like mimicking, people will just find that annoying and a little strange if you do it too often.

As useful as paraphrasing and backtracking is in itself, it really comes into its own during a psychic cold reading. The trick is to paraphrase what your sitter had said earlier in the reading. For some strange psychological reason, the sitter will think that what you've just said came out of the ether.

For example, say you're giving a reading and in your spread you turn over the Six of Spades, or if the Tarot is your thing, The Hermit - upside down.

YOU: Tell me about the frustration in your family, please. (Add "please" if you want to sound like James Van Praagh.)
SITTER: Huh? Well, My daughter's got an failing grade in Maths, she's never gotten below a B before. And my son got into a fist fight on the school playground. My children have never done anything like this.
YOU: I thought so.

LATER THAT SAME READING. . .

YOU: The cards tell me your kids are having some problems at school. Isn't that right?
SITTER: Yes.
YOU: Every cloud has a silver lining. Your children will grow stronger through adversity...(etc., etc. Just grab something from your cold reader's bag of clichés and platitudes.)

In the unlikely event the sitter says, "I just told you that" when you are paraphrasing. Just tell him or her that you are just making sure/just getting the facts straight. Or just tell them, "I knew you were going to say that." ;-)

As you can see, paraphrasing/backtracking is an important communication skill. You can practice it during your everyday conversations. You can also watch a talking head on the news. Listen for a couple of seconds, turn the sound down and repeat what he or she had just said in your own words.

Making Meanings

If you do scrying or any sort of clairvoyance, and come up with some sort of image, you can use this line effectively: "Does that mean anything to you?" As in many cold reading lines you give a sitter, this one has them doing a transderivational search for meaning.

"I'm seeing a red brick house out in the woods. Does that mean anything to you?"

Even though this is a standard line in a cold reader's repertoire, there is a problem. It presupposes that the sitter might NOT know. That's the nature of yes-no questions. There's no reason to make your job harder by setting yourself up for a miss by the language you use.

Much better to ask your sitter: "What does that mean to you?" With this line, he or she will try harder to find meaning in your images.

"I'm seeing a red brick house out in the woods. What does that mean to you?"

This will get a stronger reaction AND less chance of getting a miss.

Red Hot Cold Reading Tip

Are you giving a reading about someone's past? If so, talk about fire. Think about it. Hasn't practically everyone's life at one point or another been touched by fire, sometimes positively, but more often negatively?

Reflect on your own life for a moment. Hasn't fire entered your consciousness, strongly, at some point? It could have been the terror of a forest fire to a cozy campfire with a new love.

From my own life I can think of several experiences, including these when I was a kid: a house on fire down the street where someone was killed (it haunted me for years); almost setting my house on fire when I was playing with my chemistry set unattended by an adult. Panic city! And having big bonfires with my friends at "woods parties". Good times, indeed.

Use any sort of "past" lines to talk about fire. These can get you started:

"What's on fire?"

"Tell me about the fire."

Or, if you want to be really brazen, "Tell me about the fires."

The last line is good in that fire has usually touched (I accidentally typed "torched" ;-)) people's lives in more ways than one.

In the unlikely event that your sitter's life hasn't been affected by fire. You can always bring up a fire that was mentioned in the media that might have touched their emotions. Just fish and shotgun.

Psychic Cold Reading Tips: Things You Can Do With One Hand

This one is for you palm readers out there.

Here are a few little techniques to add flair to your hand readings.

1. Guess the Finger. Do this before you start a reading. Tell the sitter you want to see if there is telepathic rapport between the two of you. Ask her to hold out her hand - palm upwards - and to concentrate on one of her fingers. Now say to her to mentally tell you the finger she's chosen. Lightly touch the tips of her fingers, more often than not, the one she is thinking of will offer slight resistance. If you don't get it right, use one of the methods you use for handling a miss.

2. Oh, the Future! Ask for her hand, if she doesn't ask, "which one?" and just offers you one of her hands, tell her, "Oh, I see you're more interested in your future!" (Who isn't?)

3. Reflexology. Squeeze, pull and rub your way into their heart (line). If you suss out, or are told, they have simple problems like a headache, you can tell them that you also know hand reflexogy. When I lived in Thailand, I used to see the Thais rubbing the area between the thumbs and index fingers hands of their friends and relatives when they complained about having a headache. If you want to add this skill to your routine, you can find out the basics of Reflexology and get a printable hand chart here on this link.

4. Sussing out their situation. Okay, if you're experienced at reading palms you probably, consciously or unconsciously, do this already. But take a look and feel of their hands. Are they wearing rings? Where and what kind? Are there callouses, or are their hands baby-smooth? State of their fingernails? Nail polish? Chewed? Dirty nails? Are their hands shaking? I don't need to tell you the meanings. What do they mean to you? Come up with your own patter.

Another thing to keep in mind: Are they trying to fake you out? Wearing a wedding band but not having a tan line on the finger. Dressing up like a laborer but having soft hands. Watch out for these.

How to Improve Your Cold Reading Technique with YouTube Videos

You have to separate the wheat from the chaff on this one. But if you do, you'll be well rewarded. There are plenty of videos online demonstrating cold reading techniques.

I had to separate the cold reading acting techniques from the cold reading psychic techniques. Still, a few of those will get through.

It's a great way to see Derren Brown coldreading and get some tips from Ian Rowland. There are perfect demonstrations of how eyes-closed psychics like Sylvia Browne and John Edwards brush off miss after miss. It’s a piece of software (for Windows users) that gives readings at the touch of a button, very useful if you give readings over the phone or online.
From the page:

Cold Reading Flashcards Description

"Become a mind-reading artist! Blend a rich tapestry of your clients’ past, present, and future into fortune-telling/mentalist masterpieces."

Imagine possessing the ability to read anybody’s mind - and blowing their minds with your accuracy. Now also imagine having the skill to give perfect readings to anybody without having to study the methods."

That seems a bit strong to me, but it’s less than $10, so definitely worth a look.

Here’s the link if you’re interested: Cold Reading Flashcards.

Pacing the Sitter’s Current Experience

An excellent way to start a reading is to use this Ericksonian hypnotic language pattern to buildrapport and make your sitters more suggestible. All you have to do is mention two or three obvious facts and then give a suggestion or have them step into a state you’d like them to experience. Like this:

• "You’re sitting here looking at the cards, you’re listening to me speak, you wonder if I have good news or bad news, and you’re starting to feel really curious."

• "We’re both staring into the crystal, you are quite comfortable, and you can relate to everything I say easily."

• "You came to this fair with an open mind, you chose to come to my booth, I’m sitting here looking at your palms, and I see you will be very pleased with this reading."

• "You called this psychic hotline because you needed some help, and now you’re talking to me, and you’re ready to accept what I say."
As you can see, the great thing about this powerful language pattern is it’s very easy to use.

You can also use this pattern to wrap up a reading. "We’ve looked at the spread and talked about your life, we saw that you had a fairly happy childhood, that you have some problems now that you’ll soon get over, and you’ll have a brighter future very soon."

How to do a Cold Reading in the Next Few Minutes

Here’s how you can get started right away with coldreading, this method doesn’t need practice (although it helps). The term for this type of reading is called Psychometry.

1. Get your subject to give you one of her personal items, like a ring, keys, pen, etc.

2. Hold it in your outstretched hand and close your eyes

3. Let the first image that pops into your head be your start. Perhaps it’s a white door.

4. Tell your subject that you’re getting a white door. Ask her what meaning it has. Give her a couple of seconds to scan her memory for any meaning.

One of two things will happen: she’ll say yes or she’ll say no.

If she says yes, add on to what she says. For example, if she says that is the color of the front door of her parent’s house start talking about her parents in generalities, use generalities that would apply to any person her age.

For a younger lady you could say, “You’ve had some ups and downs with your relationship with your parents.”

For an older lady you could tell her that she is concerned about her parent’s health.

Take the generalities of someone you know in your own life (in the above examples of a younger lady and an older ladycase use your sister or your mother) and apply them to your reading. If the person is like no one else in your life, take the generalities in your life and use them.

These generalities work because we tend to take a positive generalization and make it true for us – just like it’s done in the daily horoscope.

What if they say no?
If the subject says no, a white door doesn’t mean anything to them. Say that it is a symbol for something that is important in their life. “I see the door and it’s closed. This means that for the time being what you are looking for life is not available to you. You’ll have to open the door yourself – find the key first.”

What if I don’t get any images?
That’s highly unlikely. The mind doesn’t like a vacuum. Trust your intuition – it works. But if it really is the case, you can just make up an image.

Use something that has lots of ambiguous meanings. Things like a piece of paper, a book, a tree, a tall man can all have plenty of meanings attached to them, making you look like a star when you start interpreting them.

“I’m seeing a piece of paper, in your possession. I can’t make out what it says on it…”

As I’ve said, people will fill in the blanks themselves but it makes you look like a psychic genius.

If you do run out of things to say (but you won’t if you refer to this blog often), just tell them the object you are holding has gone cold and that you need a different object or even a different person to do a reading on.

Try it yourself now, grab any old object lying around, and….

“I see….

1. A big house.”
2. A knife.”
3. A dog.”
4. A phone book.”
5. A beach.”

The nice thing about using Psychometry is that you can do it anywhere, and if you’ve never tried it before, you’ll notice images and things to say will pop into your mind spontaneously.

I Knew You Were Coming to This Cold Reading Blog

Thanks for visiting this site. However, I knew you were going to arrive here eventually. You’re the type of curious person I’ve been looking for: you think the cold reading techniques used by John Edward and Sylvia Brown are shite, just crap-shoots in the dark.

You can be impressed with guys like Derren Brown. I know you’ve been finding cold reading a little bit difficult - there are so many lines to memorize, so many things to pay attention to. . .

This blog will show you how to master the cold reading techniques that will amaze friends and strangers alike. It will show you how easy it is to mesmerize people your pyschic abilities. . .and even put some money in your pocket!

Please bear with me though. I am a busy person, like most of you. I’m just learning how to use this blogging platform so posts will be slow in coming at first.
